The outbreak of the global coronavirus pandemic has dramatically changed macroeconomic developments around the world, including the Czech Republic. International measures adopted to combat the pandemic have seriously hit world trade. In addition, part of the Czech economy was also shut down during the spring months because of the pandemic. This has adversely affected the consumption and investment behaviour of households and companies. Despite the massive efforts of the government and the Czech National Bank to support the recovery of the Czech economy, the ongoing pandemic has led to a deterioration in the domestic economic outlook. According to the CNB’s summer forecast, the economy will return to growth, and inflation will converge to the 2 % target in 2021. However, a resurgence of the pandemic poses the biggest risk to that outlook, as the possibility of the reintroduction of extensive quarantine measures cannot be ruled out.

Ministry of Health Protective Measure is in force which regulates the entry of persons to the Czech Republic. The measure reacts to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and coordination at the EU level. The consequent epidemiological measures and restrictions are applicable both to Czech citizens returning to the Czech Republic and to all foreign nationals.

The Czech Republic has achieved success in the field of innovation. In the Global Innovation Index (GII), it ranked 24th out of 131 world economies. According to GII, the Czech Republic ranked 28th in innovation inputs this year, higher than last year and higher than in 2018. In terms of innovation outputs, the Czech Republic ranks the 17th place, which is again an upward shift compared to previous two years.

In its more than a 100-year old history, the Czech aviation industry has gained a lot of respect internationally. For many experts, the jet trainer and light attack aircraft manufactured by Aero Vodochody (L-29, L-39 and L-159) immediately spring to mind; followed closely by multi-purpose aircraft L-410 made by Let Kunovice (currently Aircraft Industries), or the wide range of airplanes in the UL/LSA category.
